Turmeric Chai Tea Without Added Sugar

Description

A creamy turmeric chai made with black tea, milk and warming spices, without added sweetener. Includes decaf and tea-free variations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups water (300 mL)
  • 1 cup plain milk (240 mL), dairy or a suitable alternative without added sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger (about 10 g), scrubbed and thinly sliced
  • 1 small cinnamon stick, approximately 2 inches long
  • 3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 1 whole clove
  • 2 plain black tea bags

Instructions

  1. Slice the ginger, gently crack the cardamom pods, and measure the remaining ingredients.
  2. Combine the water, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and clove in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Take the pan off the heat. Add the tea bags and steep for about 3 minutes, or follow the tea package instructions. Remove the bags without squeezing hard.
  4. Add the milk. Return to low heat and stir for about 2 minutes, until steaming and warmed through. Do not boil over.
  5. Strain into a heatproof jug and divide between two mugs. If needed, add a little hot water to make approximately 2 cups. Let cool until comfortable to sip and stir if fine turmeric particles settle.

Notes

For decaf, use plain decaffeinated black tea; some caffeine remains. For a tea-free version, omit the bags and let the simmered spices stand covered off the heat for 3 minutes before adding milk. For fresh turmeric, try about 2 teaspoons finely grated root instead of the powder and adjust future batches to taste. No added sugar is different from sugar-free: milk may contain naturally occurring sugars. Refrigerate promptly and use within 3 days. This drink is not a treatment or fat-burning formula.
